About Hugh

Hugh showed an interest in drawing at an early age. Then in his teens he was given a camera and some darkroom equipment. This was the beginning of a career in commercial photography which lasted 40 years.

With a partner, he went on to establish a photographic lab servicing the advertising agencies of Sydney. At some point during this period he was encouraged by well known artist Ian McKenzie to try painting. He enrolled in a night course in oil painting at Hornsby TAFE but with family and work commitments there never seemed enough time to paint.

Then some time after retiring he began a watercolour course at the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai College. This was a beginning of a new passion. He attended watercolour workshops at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst with Ross Paterson, Joseph Zbukvic and life classes with Paul Miller. Hugh has now developed an individual style and a liking for atmospheric landscapes and seascapes in particular.
